EXCITING NEWS!

Author Elly Swartz will be streaming her new book Smart Cookie on Youtube.  Here she is reading aloud
Chapters 1-14, if you are interested.  Here is summary and an activity to follow up.

She visited CEMS last year and every student received an autographed copy of Finding Perfect.
If you haven't already done so, check out the You Will Be Found...@CEMS mental health website for more details on last year's initiative and feel free to follow along in the community read aloud of Finding Perfect (still available!) as well. Click on the red play button to access the videos of recorded chapters read by community members, students, authors, Olympic athletes, and more! This read aloud and initiative received national attention!
Take a listen & check it out! :)

Hi Families,
Hope this email finds you well.  I enjoyed our Google Meet very much on Friday-- it was nice to "see" most of you! I am looking forward to this Friday; same time! I am anxious to read more about Bett and Avery.

ABOVE is our updated schedule pushed out by administration going forward.  Expect STEM activities on Mondays and Wednesdays; email me on those days if you have questions and Google Meet on Fridays.  Hope this helps you organize your week.    BE WELL! Keep READING and getting LOTS of exercise. Mrs. Karlonas ~ :)
Also, I am sending you the online Super Science Access code.

HAPPPY FRIDAY! :) March 27th, 2020

Whaley/Karlonas Team,

FIRST,  SO SORRY for all the emails.... but check your email again at 11:00 am. :)

The GOOGLE MEET today @ 11:00am is just a check in to say hi to our students and read some of our current read aloud book.
Parents may carry on with their day!

Thank you all for your time and patience as we learn this new system.  I would encourage to students to please continue to turn in work via snapshot/email or share on google drive.   It would be scored more with feedback and less emphasis on a grade.  I would appreciate seeing each and every one of your thoughts on the material.

Enjoy the sun this weekend,
~Mrs. Karlonas

Happy Wednesday :)

HELLO WHALEY/KARLONAS TEAM,

I am happy to hear all the feedback about how you are adjusting.  I posted a new list of STEM activities and one more on Thursday.  Friday, there will be no new lessons.  I know this is VERY different from the norm... you are doing great!

IF you don't get all the activities completed, it is OKAY.  Save it for the later or for Friday.  Please TAKE CARE OF YOU.  Go to the SELF CARE BINGO tab and remind yourself to take breaks.

We have a couple of updates in our schedule that we will roll out next Monday (hint: think less is more).

Also, please message me by email if you would be interested and available for a GOOGLE MEET up this Friday.  I would like to read the end of the book To Night Owl from Dogfish.  Wouldn't that be great? Let me know what time works for you!

Also, I would like you to play around with Flipgrid by the end of this week.  Here is the class code:
Let me know how it goes.  I expect glitches or issues, so please be patient.  If it works without problems, please send a quick 1 minute video on HOW you are doing and WHAT you are doing for fun at home.

MISSING YOU ALL.

Best,
Mrs. Karlonas :)

PS
If you have a question of how your student can get into Google, feel free to email the helpdesk and they will contact you directly.... Students would just go to mail.google.com, or classroom.google.com etc and sign in using firstname.lastname@capeelizabethschools.org and their email address.
*We encourage you to let the technology department know directly if the school Ipad device is compromised.*  Please reach out to: techhelp@capeelizabethschools.org to report issues, damage, etc.

Monday, March 23rd, 2020 Good day to you all! :) In the words of my 7th grader, "Let's GO!"

Good morning,
Hopefully my schedule makes sense to you all and is easy to follow.  Go to the AT HOME DAILY 5th GRADE DAILY STEM SCHEDULE.  I will post a new one each day.

I have outlined a few expectations and time frames that I would like you to dedicate to math and science.

If YOU have any QUESTIONS at all on material, PLEASE email or send me a chat on the google doc.  I AM HERE to HELP8-12 noon. Administration suggested you work on WL, Allied Arts and Band assignments in the afternoon. :)

NOTICE: for science, the activities will be optional because supplies may be limited.  However, for the response questions, you can always take a picture, email, or type out on google drive and share with me; whatever you prefer.  I would prefer any way that I can read your work!

KEEP BEING CURIOUS AND READING!

MISS YOU SO MUCH,
Mrs. Karlonas :)

PS
If I do not hear from ALL families, I will be calling on Wednesday to see how you all are doing. Thank you!

Happy 1st Day of Spring :)

Good morning Whaley/Karlonas Team,

It's Friday check-in!  Congratulate yourselves on one week down!  This is new to all of us, such an adjustment.  There is so much to balance, PLEASE do what you can.  No judgment here as we're dealing with the same adjustments at my home, too.  Stay positive, we will get through this.  I'll continue to update my blog and email. Please have students email me if they have any questions or just want to say hello.
I am not assigning anything new until Monday.  Please allow students to decide if they would like to explore the gizmos on Explorelearning.com.  There are some great math and science opportunities.

Please send me pictures and updates on how you are spending your time.
My family is playing Scrabble, watching movies, ping pong, reading, chores, cooking, and taking walks or bike rides. :)

Hope everyone has a great weekend,
~Kate
